DuringtheAlliedoccupationofJapan,AustraliaenergeticallytriedJapaneseClassBandClassCwarcriminals.However,astheColdWarintensified,JapanwasincreasinglyseenbytheUnitedStatesanditsalliesasapotentialallyagainstcommunismandwasnolongerconsideredathreattoPacificsecurity.Inthe1950s,concernsabouttheguiltofindividualJapanesesoldiersmadewayforpragmatismandpoliticalgainwhenthesentencesofwarcriminalsbecameapoliticalbargainingchip.
